Despite a ton of leaks in the past months, NetherRealm Studios was apparently successful in hiding some special character appearances for Mortal Kombat 11.

The launch trailer signals just a few more days until the latest installment officially releases worldwide. Perhaps in a bid to cleanse itself from the unconvincing rap soundtracks, the developer chose to go with the popular classic theme this time around.

The footage comprises mostly of scenes that earlier trailers have already shown such as characters from the past coming face to face with their future versions, both Kahns dueling in the arena, Kronika recruiting her armies, and such. However, the latter part of the footage is where things become really interesting.

Cyrax and Sektor appear before Scorpion and Sub-Zero to stop them from interfering in Kronika’s plan to rewrite history. Later, Sheeva stands behind Kitana (alongside the Shokan) as they get ready to fighting against Shao Kahn’s armies. These three classic characters have never surfaced before in any leaks or official materials, which begs the question: are they intended to be released as post-release downloadable characters?

It’s difficult to say for now. NetherRealm Studios has featured characters like Tanya before who were part of the storyline but later revealed as playable characters. However, at the same time, there were other characters like Baraka and Rain who were also part of the storyline but never became playable.

Also, just to clarify, the glowing character shown at the very end is not Fujin. He’s actually a powered-up Liu Kang, which kind of makes this a spoiler by the developer. Fujin, though, is a character highly rumored to be released down the road.

Mortal Kombat 11 is scheduled to release for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC on April 23, 2019. If you pre-order right now, you will unlock Shao Kahn from day-one. If you decide to wait, the emperor will probably be part of the first Kombat Pack that is already confirmed to feature Shang Tsung.
